“Currently making our bay window into a reading books/time-in space because of this video,” wrote another TikToker. “OMG, this is the best idea!” wrote one enthusiastic viewer. Viewers applauded Lauren’s creative calm down corner in the comments section. “Just simply a safe place for your child and you.” “This is not a punishment and is not the same as time out,” she explains. The video concludes with a final caption, in which Lauren explains the true purpose of the calm down corner. Some, like All Are Welcome, seem designed to inspire, while others, like Are You a Cow? are more lighthearted.įinally, Lauren explains, the calm down corner is perfect when her child needs “a safe place to work through emotions.” In a small box next to the bookshelf, Lauren reveals a handful of different coloring books and sensory toys, designed to give her child a safe, creative outlet for their feelings. Third, the calm down corner makes a great “cozy place to read.” Next to the pillow, there is a wall-mounted shelf with a range of different picture books. Second, Lauren explains in a caption, the calm down corner can be used for “wind down time before bed/naps.” The camera pans over to the backrest pillow, which sits atop a soft shag rug. One piece of art reads, “Calming Techniques,” and includes illustrated calming strategies like “breathe deeply” or “read a book.” The other piece of art reads, “Feelings,” and includes illustrations of children experiencing emotions ranging from happiness to sadness to silliness. The first use for the calm down corner, according to Lauren, is “having ‘time-in’ when big feelings are present.’” A close-up shot of the wall reveals that the framed artwork is actually designed to help kids identify and work through big feelings. A caption reads, “What we use our calm down corner for.” The video begins with a shot of the calm down corner, which features a cozy beige backrest pillow, framed artwork, and plenty of books and toys. Unlike a time-out corner, which generally serves as a form of punishment, Lauren’s calm down corner is all about healing and working through tough emotions. In the video, Lauren provides a numbered list of all the things the calm down corner is perfect for. The pre-loved wooden dolls bed was kindly given to us by a good friend. Our compact kitchen, the one big ticket item in this area, is from EcoToys and was a Christmas present for Immy from us and my parents. There is also a basket of coloured silk scarves to the far right which are used in all sorts of playful ways – a tablecloth, wrap for a baby, etc. The dining area butts up against an Expedit bookcase which I use for storage on both sides – you can see on the top of the bookcase and to the right of the table baskets and containers labelled with picture labels to show the food items which belong inside each. Often it is the little details which make a space feel more home like but they do not have to be expensive. I know we are blessed to have a playroom in our house (we traded location for space with our last move) but even when we lived in a smaller home I always tried to find a space (albeit on a much smaller scale) for home corner play as it is such an important part of the imaginative play of young children.ĭress up area featuring the DIY Kids: Dress Up Wardrobe made from a cardboard box and a cheval mirror.Ī little lounge area with someone to rest your feet, books to read, a family photo, vase of flowers (the vase is a plastic juice bottle wrapped with coloured tape), paper plate clock and calendar.

Monument has been involved with RGS since near the beginning after it was hired by the RGS coalition of companies to lobby for changes to surveillance laws in Congress. “Your inquiry has helped to prompt new conversations between our organizations and we’re looking forward to working together more in the future.” “Evernote has been a longtime member - but they were less active over the last couple of years, so we removed them from the website,” said an email from Monument Advocacy, a Washington, D.C. In the end, the reason for Evernote’s removal seems remarkably benign. After all, few tech companies have openly and actively advocated for an increase in government surveillance of their users, since it’s the users themselves who are asking for more privacy baked into the services they use. While that may be true - companies often sign on to lobbying efforts that ultimately help their businesses government surveillance is one of those rare thorny issues that got some of the biggest names in Silicon Valley rallying behind the cause. The website of the Reform Government Surveillance coalition, which features Amazon, Apple, Dropbox, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Snap, Twitter, Verizon Media and Zoom, but not Evernote, which is also a member. A spokesperson for one of the RGS companies said they weren’t all that surprised since companies “drop in and out of trade associations.” TechCrunch also asked the other companies in the RGS coalition if they knew why Evernote was removed and all either didn’t respond, wouldn’t comment or had no idea. Evernote cites its membership of RGS in its most recent transparency report and that it supports efforts to “reform practices and laws regulating government surveillance of individuals and access to their information” - which makes its disappearance from the RGS website all the more bizarre. Still, Evernote was a powerful ally to have onboard, and showed RGS that its support for reforming government surveillance laws was gaining traction outside of the companies named in the leaked NSA files. “We are still members.”Įvernote joined the coalition in October 2014, a year and a half after PRISM first came to public light, even though the company was never named in the leaked Snowden documents. “We hadn’t realized our logo had been removed from the Reform Government Surveillance website,” said an Evernote spokesperson, when reached for comment by TechCrunch. What’s even more strange is that nobody noticed for two years, not even Evernote. The idea was simple enough: to call on lawmakers to limit surveillance to targeted threats rather than conduct a dragnet collection of Americans’ private data, provide greater oversight and allow companies to be more transparent about the kinds of secret orders for user data that they receive.Īpple, Facebook, Google, LinkedIn, Microsoft, Twitter, Yahoo and AOL (to later become Verizon Media, which owns TechCrunch - for now) were the founding members of Reform Government Surveillance, or RGS, and over the years added Amazon, Dropbox, Evernote, Snap and Zoom as members.īut then sometime in June 2019, Evernote quietly disappeared from the RGS website without warning. Six months later, the tech companies formed a coalition under the name Reform Government Surveillance, which as the name would suggest was to lobby lawmakers for reforms to government surveillance laws. National Security Agency under the so-called PRISM program, according to highly classified government documents leaked by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden. In 2013, eight tech companies were accused of funneling their users’ data to the U.S. In either case, an all-in-one motor driver is often used which integrates the required functions into a single chip. This can be achieved with sensors, by using an optical encoder or Hall effect sensor, or without sensors by inferring the rotational angle from the back EMF generated by the magnetic field. The control circuitry needs to be aware of the relative angular position of the motor, so it can activate the correct phase at the right time. Varying the control voltage may be achieved with analog components, or digitally using an FPGA or microcontroller. To provide continuous motion, the brushless motor’s controller reverses the direction, or phase, of the current each time the motor rotates 180 degrees, or another fixed amount such as 120 degrees for a 3-phase motor. However, one of the main drawbacks of the brushless motor is cost: of the motor itself, and of the more complex drive circuitry that’s needed. With no wear on a brush or commutator, they need less maintenance and have a longer operational life. Instead it uses transistors in the electronic control circuitry to apply and remove power to the rotor's wire, producing an alternating current from a DC supply to reverse the current on each half-cycle, achieving continuous rotation.īrushless DC motors are typically smoother and more efficient than brushed motors, have higher torque-to-power ratios and offer higher speeds with more precise control. This causes the polarity of the magnetic field to reverse each time the motor rotates 180º, resulting in smooth and continuous rotation.Īs its name suggests, a brushless DC motor has no brushes. As the commutator rotates it connects and disconnects these segments through the brushes, applying power to different pairs of segments. To fix this we use the commutator, which is a conductive copper sleeve around the axle of the rotor, physically and electrically divided into segments. That’s all very well but if we just used regular wires to connect the rotor windings to the power supply, once the rotor has turned far enough its magnetic force would effectively reverse direction – so the rotor would just move back and forth, instead of rotating in one direction. The stator can be a permanent magnet or electromagnet, depending on the requirements of any particular application. When we send current through the rotor windings, the field generated interacts with the stator's field and creates the force that turns the rotor. The rotor consists of one or more windings of wire wrapped around a core made of a ferrous metal, usually iron, and connected to power with a metal ‘brush’. This interacts with the primary magnetic field to create an opposing force that moves one part of the motor, usually causing it to rotate around an axle.īrushed DC motors consist of four key components the stationary magnet (called a stator), the rotor, the commutator and the brushes (see Figure 1). The current flowing through the wire generates the second magnetic field. It does this through the interaction between magnets, one of which is typically created by passing a current through wire bound around a ferrite core. Going back to basics, the fundamental principle of an electric motor is, of course, that it converts electricity into motion. We’ll also introduce brushless DC motors and their pros and cons. In this article, we’ll explain the basics of brushed DC motors, and then look at the circuitry required to drive them. Brushed motors are lower cost and are simpler to drive, so they remain a popular option. More recently, brushless DC motors have become increasingly popular but for many applications brushed DC motors are still the right choice. By David Birks, Applications Engineer, Diodes IncorporatedĭC electric motors have been around for nearly two hundred years, with a steady series of refinements in that time. Shimabukuro's records have topped the Billboard World Music Charts on numerous occasions, and as a live performer he has become one of the hottest tickets around. Even athletes helped fuel the intensity of his artistic fire. As he matured, Shimabukuro also found inspiration from guitar players, drummers, pianists, and singers. As a youngster growing up in Honolulu, Hawaii, Shimabukuro started playing the instrument at the age of four, learning the basics from his mother, Carol, and then developing his craft further by studying the likes of musical masters such as Eddie Kamae, Ohta-San and Peter Moon. Jake Shimabukuro's wholly unique approach to the ukulele started early. Free Yourself Up is about empowering yourself, emboldening yourself, no matter what's going wrong." "It's something you think about and obsess over-and write songs about. "This album is based in the realities in our time, which have inevitably become part of everyone's daily life," notes Kearney. The album's title serves as both an exhortation to listeners and a statement of purpose for the band, its songs unfolding with a joyful swagger even when channeling anxiety over the state of the world. Their most intimate and collaborative work to date, Free Yourself Up finds Lake Street Dive expanding their sound with more intricate textures, fuller-bodied arrangements, and stacks of sublime background harmonies. Along with earning lavish acclaim, the Boston-bred act's most recent full-length debuted in the top ten on the Billboard 200, and spent a virtually unprecedented seven-and-a-half months on the non-commercial radio charts. In the 15 years since their formation, the band's infectious vitality has only magnified in appeal, as proven with the release of their 2018 album Free Yourself Up. With their singular mix of soul and R&B and wholehearted rock & roll, Lake Street Dive make music that's timeless yet immediate, exuberant yet reflective. They don't even wear helmets as part of the simulation. You have to watch yourself in oxygen-free environments, but enemies don't have to. The problem with some of these digital enemies is that they don't follow any sort of rules. Not to mention the robot's shockingly powerful sense of despair and self-loathing. You'll end up in a really messed up version of Fyrestone (where you first meet Claptrap in Borderlands), populated by high-jumping digital super-bandits that, thankfully, only exist in Claptrap's head. There's also a very diverse collection of enemies to be found in Claptrap's mind. While this makes great use out of the Pre-Sequel's jumping and butt-slamming mechanics, it also means that slipping off the edge of a cliff (or being knocked off it) is a regular occurrence. Another big downside is that there are a lot of floating islands in Claptrap's head. Flying spam bots project advertisements onto your view to obscure your vision. Pop-up signs often shoot up from the ground to impede your movement. Mostly, they come in the form of computer-related in jokes. In the sky above the Nexus level, you'll see Jack's gigantic silhouette as he peers through Claptrap's eye.īut this is Claptrap's head we're talking about, so there's bound to be some annoyances. The experience itself is kind of trippy, and a very creative departure from the "normal" environments of Pandora and its moon, Elpis. Claptrap's defenses don't recognize you as a valid user, so they try to eliminate you along with everything else.Ĭlaptrap's Voyage is designed for level 30 characters, so be sure to level up before plunging into the depths of the robot's neurotic mind. We're talking fragmented memories, glitches, viruses, and malware all over the place, but that's not the worst of them. As you might expect, the place is a total mess. You're there inside the robot's mind, and that's all that matters. Suspension of belief already gets stretched to the limit once you realize that Claptrap can't climb stairs in Borderlands 2, but can climb ladders in the Pre-Sequel. The narrative really falls apart if you're playing as Claptrap, despite a few tweaks to the NPC dialogue, but that doesn't really matter at this point. The team of Vault Hunters agree to be digistructed and thrust inside Claptrap to retrieve the information because, despite Jack's sociopathic disposition, a mercenary still has to eat. Handsome Jack is well on his way to becoming Pandora's greatest villain, but first he must retrieve a ludicrously powerful weapon that's locked away deep within the robot's psyche. The Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel is reaching its inevitable conclusion, and where better to spend it than within the depths of Claptrap's mind? Actually, there are probably several better places to spend it, but regardless, you that's where you end up in Claptastic Voyage the fourth and final DLC release for The Pre-Sequel.Ĭlaptastic Voyage tells a side story that takes place shortly after the events of The Pre-Sequel's main campaign.
